How this Works

How Comments Work

TrekScratch is designed so that you can join in on the conversation.   On each article you have the opportunity to leave a comment (or a bunch of comments) by clicking Reply on the right side of the article title.

If you want to reply to someone else’s comment just click Reply to the right of their comment.

Add a Fun Picture

my-pictureYou’ll notice that TrekScratch assigned you a colorful glyph when you comment.  You can change it to anything you want!  And it’s easy!

  • Visit Gravatar.com
  • Sign up using the same email address you use when you comment here (it’s safe, they won’t spam you)
  • Choose a picture and save it to gravatar (it doesn’t have to be a picture of you- chose what you like!)

And you’re done!  Next time you visit TrekScratch the funny little geometric hash will be gone and the picture you picked will be shining in glory!

I’m Shy

Don’t be. I enjoy staying connected, it’s fun and everyone here is pretty friendly.

I’m Concerned

There’s nothing in the rules that say you have to use your real name. Whatever you type in the name box is what will show up- use initials or a nickname if you like. It will be like a puzzle for the rest of us!

Please do use your real email address as TrekScratch uses it to make sure only people who are “approved” can write comments. This prevents “junk-mail” comments. The first time you write, your comment will be held for approval. After your first comment is approved subsequent comments don’t require approval, as long as you use the same email address.

Smileys :)

Did you know you can make fancy smileys with hardly any effort?  If you type :) it will come out like this :) . Use a semicolon for a wink ;) ;) or use a colon and a capital “P” to stick out your tongue:P :P . Here’s a complete list of all 22 smileys and how to make them.

What’s a Permalink

Permalink just means “Permanent Link”. Suppose you want to send a page to someone, or point them to a funny comment, just right click on the Permalink and chose “Copy Link” or “Copy Link Location” or “Copy Shortcut” (different computers say different things). Now you can paste that link into an email and it’s sure to point to just the right spot.

Text Tricks

You’re seriously still reading this? Did you know that you can make your comment stylish?  It’s true- we’ll just use these little markers called tags.  Tags come in opening and closing pairs.  An opening tag looks like this <tag> and a closing tag looks like this </tag>.

Here’s some examples:

This is <b>Bold</b> text.  Looks like:  This is Bold text.
This is <i>Italic</i> text.  Looks like: This is Italic text.

Got it? Ok, that’s your HTML lesson for the day.  I’ll leave comments open on this page so you can play around.  If you made is this far on the page you surely deserve it!
